The Near Side AND the Far Side were groomed today. But the couple of inches of fresh snow weren’t enough to help the tracking situation, so don’t expect much improvement finding set tracks (icey under the fresh). Skating is great…yeah, fast. Saturday, expect some more grooming on the Near Side…getting ready for 3 events: Tracking Workshop at 9, the last Kids Day at 1, and Moonlight Ski at 6. Great skiing on minimal snow and temp’s predicted to be mild.

BONUS: we groomed the WEST FORK Road this afternoon, and conditions there are typical… pocked and firm the first mile or so, then deeper and softer snow the farther you go. No tracks set (too firm the first mile and a half). Great skiing past Basin.

Walk by the Light of the Moon Feb 4-Red Lodge Nordic Center

Once a month, as the full moon dictates, it seems safe to venture out into the dark while the moon makes shadows. Experience your National Forest from a different perspective – under the light of the full moon. Please join our interpreters and naturalists for evenings of exploration in the moonlight. Interpreters range from foresters to biologists, from scientists to historians, from poets to storytellers.

Saturday, February 4th – Woodwind Moon with BRTA at Red Lodge Nordic Center, 6 p.m

Many of the walks are a night or two before the full moon, to take advantage of the earlier moonrise. The walks will often be located along a trail, with one or more interpreters located along the route of ½ to 2 miles on easy terrain.

Participants may want to bring flashlights in case the moon does not cooperate. Anticipate the weather and dress accordingly.

Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day (Feb 4) by grabbing your daughter, mom,

or girlfriend to try out snowshoeing on the grand Continental Divide one hour north of

Helena. This is a beginner walk, but you should be comfortable outside for up to 4 hours

and be able to walk up mild hills. We will start on a closed road to get our snowlegs, then

move onto trails and climb for a distance. It is all downhill on the way back. Bring a

lunch, snacks, water, thermos, as we will go as far as the group wants to go, but not more

than 4 hours. Dress in layers. Boots should be good, comfortable hiking or snow boots.

Montana Discovery Foundation Moonlight Hike Elkhorns Feb 6-Helena

Audience: Anyone wishing to be outside. Family friendly!

Message: Join the Montana Discovery Foundation to explore the Willard Creek drainage by moonlight. This creek bottom travels through both the 1988 burn and live trees. The views are usually amazing on this outing. The group will split into 2 smaller groups and travel along different routes. Reservations open on January 23 and spaces are limited to 30 people! MDF is able to provide some snowshoes for hike participants. This hike is free and family friendly.

Montana Discovery Foundation Snowshoe Trip Flesher Pass Feb 20-Helena

approx. 40 miles NW of Helena on Hwy. 279

10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Difficulty: Moderate snowshoe. The biggest challenge is the length of time.

Message: Join the Montana Discovery Foundation on Monday, February 20, 2012, for a snowshoe trip on the Continental Divide Trail heading southwest from the top of Flesher Pass. This trek will move through open hillsides and amongst some beautiful, old Douglas fir trees. Information will be available on the insect outbreak in this area. Reservations are required due to group size limitations. This event is free and open to the public and snowshoes available from MDF.
