Hi Paddlers,

Our first official 2012 Tuesday Evening Paddle last week brought out 17 boats for a beautiful evening on the Reservoir. We are going to go there again this week and the weather is forecast to be another nice evening.

So for this Tuesday we are planning to leave shore and be on the water again by 6:15 at the Helena Regulating Reservoir on York Road. Because of the Custer Avenue construction, I think the best way to get there from town is to go east out Hwy. 12 toward E. Helena. Turn left on Wylie Drive. Go about 5 miles north. Turn right on York Road and go about 2 miles. The entrance into the Reservoir is on the right, shortly past the intersection of Lake Helena Drive & York Rd.

For those new to the group, here is a short blurb about what we do:

Our flatwater paddling group is a group of folks who informally get together on Tuesday evenings for a couple hours to paddle on various open bodies of water in the Helena area We've paddled at the Helena Regulating Reservoir, from York Bridge going both north & south, from the Causeway on Lake Helena Drive, on Canyon Ferry Lake, and at the Gates of the Mountains. We try to be on the water by 6:15.

People need to have their own boats, life jackets, paddles, etc. and be able and responsible for themselves. You should also be pretty comfortable on open water and in dealing with weather changes, wind, rain, cold, and occasional choppy water. It's a fun, sociable group of people and we all enjoy paddling for fun and recreation. We also enjoy getting more people involved in paddling.

Each Tuesday evening we decide where to meet the following week and I've volunteered to e-mail reminders about the meeting spot. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Early Season Mystic Lake Hike-Billings

Molly and I hiked up to Mystic Lake in the West Rosebud Drainage on 4/16/12 (the date in the video is wrong). Conditions were about 45 and mostly sunny, light winds. Lower section of trail was mostly dry, the upper section was mostly snow covered. Those with alpine environment experience will find the trail to be quite fun. But less experienced hikers may want to wear snowshoes or crampons and use trekking poles depending on time of day and temperature. The Lake was still frozen over and the trail past the lake looked to be quite snow covered. Avalanche conditions were non existent on the hike to the lake, but maybe different past the lake.

Wiebe Pottery is located at the base of the Elkhorn Mountains. Darci and Arne are self-taught artisans and the works they create are inspired by the beauty just outside their door. They create art in functional pottery pieces that are used and cherished in everyday life. All their pottery is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe.

Walk by the Light of the Moon June 2-Senia Trail-Billings

Once a month, as the full moon dictates, it seems safe to venture out into the dark while the moon makes shadows. Experience your National Forest from a different perspective – under the light of the full moon. Please join our interpreters and naturalists for evenings of exploration in the moonlight. Interpreters range from foresters to biologists, from scientists to historians, from poets to storytellers.

Saturday, June 2nd – Rising Forest Moon on Senia Trail , 7:00 p.m

Many of the walks are a night or two before the full moon, to take advantage of the earlier moonrise. The walks will often be located along a trail, with one or more interpreters located along the route of ½ to 2 miles on easy terrain.

Participants may want to bring flashlights in case the moon does not cooperate. Anticipate the weather and dress accordingly.

Intro to Kayaking & Paddle Technique

Become familiar with the basics of the equipment before you get in the water! You’ll learn the different paddling strokes, along with how to control, stop, and brace your boat. Kayaks may be rented for $10 each - to be paid AT CLASS. Please let us know in advance if you will need one. Our instructor has been successfully teaching people of all ages and abilities for a number of years.
