Red Lodge Nordic Center Update 3/10/10 Billings

Posted on March 11th, 2010

RL Nordic Center is experiencing warm, pleasant March weather which has been cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons. Skate skiing has been great on firm morning snow. Classic skiing good in the pm's. Grooming has been limited due to frozen, icey morning snow and melted snow as soon as the sun hits it. Setting of tracks has been nearly impossible.
So don't expect much improvement until winter snows return and then only if the weather stays cold enough to preserve it.
Although you may ski at RL Nordic Center in marginal conditions, we may have to cease grooming if the weather does not cooperate.

Yes, crust cruising is a possibility at the Nordic Center in the morning when the snow is frozen! The skate skiing is good early on firm trails and open meadows. Classic skiing is less enjoyable until pm when the sun and temperatures soften the snow.
Ed has been touching up some trails with the groomer, but the window of opportunity is narrow with our temps so warm. We'll try to do more grooming for the weekend.
The Far Side has not been groomed and has some frozen ruts. Be careful over there; it's not for the faint of heart.

We have received 10+ inches of new snow in the past 24 hours! Groomers are working on it. Skate skiing conditions are soft. Track skiing is great. Conditions should be great for the weekend with moderate temps and more snow showers predicted.
Plan to attend our 3rd annual Backcountry Film Festival at the Elks, on Broadway, downtown Red Lodge, 7:00, $5, Friday, Feb. 19. It's Winter Carnival weekend! Parade at 6:00; Love Prom with Tom Catmull & the Clerics at 9:00.
And next weekend...Nordic Ski Festival at Red Lodge Nordic Center.

"Another great weekend of skiing is in store at RL Nordic Center. Trails are in great shape despite another dry spell in Red Lodge. Tracks are set (even on the Far Side). Check out our new igloo.

Have a fun day."

Red Lodge Nordic Center 1/30/10 Billings

You should find great skiing at Red Lodge Nordic Center this weekend. All 14 Km of trails are rolled and groomed for skate skiing or classic, and 10 Km have set track for classic. Snow conditions are very good and temperatures are predicted to be in the upper 20's or low 30's.
The West Fork road was rolled to Cascade C.G. (about 5 miles) Tuesday, making for a pleasant day of skiing out there. (Snow depth is surprisingly low, even skimpier up near Cascade). Track was set on 2 miles (to Basin C.G.).
Pray for snow!

We groomed the West Fork Road this morning, rolling all the way to Cascade CG and set tracks to Basin CG. The snow is only about 3" deep and is mostly soft. Good skiing.
At the Nordic Center, we have been rolling some snow and knocking down some of the drifts. Our goal is to have it all rolled and tracks set by the weekend. Skiing now is great...even some crust cruising on the open hills.
Our next event is the moonlight ski Saturday evening, Jan. 30. Full moon rises after 6:00 pm.

Enjoy the skiing!
