With such a good turnout last year, BRTA is beefing up it’s lesson program this year with a stronger, more organized schedule. We have room for more kids, so contact Elise Fouts: ehfouts@msn.com or Les Hedquist: 425-3804 to register. Beginning classes are aimed at new, beginning or second year children that need to refresh their skills. New this year, is an “advanced” class for stronger, truly proficient skiers. Students with just one beginning class behind them do not qualify for this class.

Moms and dads: we also intend to provide informal ski lessons for you during the kids lessons. No need to stand around and miss the fun. Rentals available at Sylvan Peak if you need them.

Backcountry Film Festival Feb 25-Red Lodge

As part of Red Lodge Mountain’s Winter Carnival events, the BRTA is hosting the Winter Wildlands Alliance (WWA) Backcountry Film Festival on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Elks Club in Red Lodge.  The festival showcases inspirational and thought-provoking films from grassroots filmmakers that will invigorate, inform and leave you dreaming about the bliss of winter adventures. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children 14 and under.   Tickets will be sold only at the door.  Films will begin at approximately 7 pm, after the Cardboard Classic parade.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the Elks.

Films include Teton Gravity Research’s cut of “Deeper”; a film about legendary snowboarder Jeremy Jones and other top riders as they forsake helicopters, snowmobiles and lifts to venture deep into untouched terrain under their own power.  “Desert River”, a beautiful ski adventure into Alaska, and “Whitebark Warrior” which chronicles the decline of thousand-year old whitebark pines due to climate change and efforts underway to save these iconic high alpine trees.  for children 14 and under.   Tickets will be sold only at the door.  Films will begin at approximately 7 pm, after the Red Lodge Winter Carnival Cardboard Classic parade.

Moonlight Ski- Jan 21- Red Lodge

Venue: Red Lodge Nordic Center

The Beartooth Recreational Trails Association and Beartooth Ranger District will host the “Skier’s Full Moon Ski” on Friday, January 21st, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Red Lodge Nordic center.  Ski along the shadow of the aspens then relax by a warm fire with a bowl of chili or hot dog, cornbread and hot cocoa.  Feel free to contribute cookies or desert goodies and bring your preferred beverages.

The featured speaker for the “Skier’s Moon will be Ray Masters, co-author of the new book “Skiing Red Lodge”.  His talk will begin at 7:00 pm, with possible encore presentations depending on demand.

Red Lodge Nordic Center is located 3 miles west of Red Lodge off Highway 78.  Follow Highway 78 to the one mile marker, and turn left, or west, and follow Fox Road two more miles and turn right (north) on Smith Road to parking area.  Hiking without skis will not be permitted on groomed trails, so the speaker will be located near the trailhead.

Participants may want to bring binoculars and a flashlight in case the moon does not cooperate.  Anticipate the weather and dress accordingly.

Beartooth Moon Walk- Oct 22- Billings

The Beartooth Ranger District will close out the year of full moon walks with the “Community Moon” event on Friday, October 22nd from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at Café Regis in Red Lodge. Normally, these walks have a staggered start time, but the format tonight will require a more precise start.

The “Community Moon” is meant to celebrate all types of communities, share thoughts on how the landscapes of the Beartooths have shaped the character and culture of our communities, and what practices keep it all going.

The format tonight includes a panel discussion, with the following panel members:

William Snell, Crow Tribal member

Brian Roat, Camp Senia outfitting and guiding

Jeff McNeish, Mining and community – 19th through 21st centuries

Heyneman Family, Ranchers

Sierra Golberg, Speaking for youth

In addition, there will be a musical performance by folk singer Bill Staines, at the Café Regis, following the panel discussion, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
